Synopsis
FROM SPIRAL TO RHISOME. BETWEEN LITERARY RECONSTRUCTION AND DECONSTRUCTION OF THE MYTH OF CRACOW AND ITS DEPENDENCE ON NEW MEDIA
The author analyzes various forms of Cracow’s image in contemporary literature. The analysis aims at answering questions related to the myth of the city. One could wonder if Cracow is still defined as this “magic place” that was so beautifully envisioned in dramas by S. Wyspiański and poems by K. I. Gałczyński. If it is the case, the process of “reconstructing the myth of Cracow” is present in contemporary literature. However, the author also probes the possibility of “deconstructing the myth of Cracow” that seems to be visible during the past two decades in contemporary literature. The observation of contemporary literature demonstrates the vitality of the threefold vision of the city in the literature: firstly, the generation of the myth of Cracow as a magical place, what is happening in the classicist poetry; secondly, the deconstruction of the myth in poetry of the representatives of the barbarizing movement; and thirdly, generating an image of the city perceived as a hypertextual, rhizomatic space, which we can observe in the literature using new media. The third aspect of the issue mentioned above leads also to reflection on the question of to what extent the contemporary act of literary creation is still today the area of creative freedom, and the extent to which it turns out to be strongly (McLuhan’s medium) determined by the specificity of the medium applied by the author.
