Synopsis

FROM TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES TO POLISH GLOTTODIDACTICS – AN OVERVIEW OF THE CONCEPT

The matter ref lected upon in this article is glottodidactics – a relatively new academic discipline formed  in the second half of the previous century that was derived from applied linguistics and covers a wide area of teaching and studying foreign languages. There are differences in the ways it is seen and defined, caused by its complexity and interdisciplinarity. Thanks to the efforts of linguists and educators, the beginning of the 21st saw the creation of Polish glottodidactics – a subdiscipline of general glottodidactics, also known as the didactics of the Polish language as a foreign one, whose status is not yet properly comprehended. This article, which presents theories, opinions, and experiences of specialists and creators of both general and Polish glottodidactics, aims to make the matter of both disciplines clearer and to help to understand them better.
