Synopsis
A CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF POLISH VERB ASPECT AND TEACHING POLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
The article concerns the issue of Polish verb aspect in the contrastive approach. The relevant grammatical category is seen here as a problem of translation from and into German, as well as a challenge for those teaching Polish as a foreign language to students representing non-Slavic languages, and for the students themselves. Applying cognitive semantics methods (in particular the theories of Renata Grzegorczykowa and Volkmar Lehmann) to empirical research based on Polish-German and German-Polish translation has brought answers to important questions regarding functional exponents of aspect in a non-aspectual language, real proportions between contextual and cognitive indicators of (im)perfectiveness and the potential irrelevance of aspect in certain contexts in Polish. The results could be applied to glottodidactics. They provide a base for introducing changes in teaching aspect to foreigners, especially to students from non-Slavic countries.
