Synopsis
IN SEARCH OF THE TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTS OF THE KLISZCZAK FOLK BAND – CONTEMPORARY (RE)CONSTRUCTIONS
Over the past two decades, the region encompassing Myślenice, Sucha Beskidzka, and Rabka Zdrój has witnessed a surge in grassroots initiatives aimed at fostering regional identity. Notably, this includes the establishment of regional ensembles and accompanying instrumental bands. This article delves into the nuanced processes guiding instructors in these ensembles as they navigate repertoire selection and collaboration with musicians to define the traditional ‘Kliszczacki’ composition of a folk band. Within this exploration, a critical examination is undertaken to unravel the intricate arguments and historical-cultural dynamics influencing the choice of specific instruments deemed representative of Kliszczak culture. Equally vital is an exploration of the diverse interpretations of ‘traditionality’ that surface based on the context of music-making – whether in informal, offstage settings, or the more formal and staged environment, particularly during festivals. Leveraging insights from my field research, I aim to interlink these considerations with the archival knowledge, literature, and preserved instrumentation in the Kliszczak area. The ultimate objective is to address a pivotal question: Is the contemporary pursuit of the traditional instrumental composition of the Kliszczak band more about reconstructing a historical state or constructing an entirely new artistic dimension?
