IN SEARCH OF SATISFACTION AND CURIOSITY: TEACHERS AND STUDENTS AS READERS
This article analyzes why the reading habits of teachers—particularly of the Polish language — along with their reading preferences, familiarity with contemporary literary trends, and awareness of their students’ reading interests, play a crucial role in fostering curiosity about the texts assigned in the classroom. In order to better examine teachers’ aptitudes for meeting these challenges, the paper presents the results of two studies focusing on various aspects of their professional challenges and reading attitudes. The first is a survey aimed at comparing the reading activities and choices of the secondary school teachers who prepare students for the final ‘matura’ exams with the reading practices of individuals sharing similar socio-demographic characteristics. These findings are subsequently contrasted with nationwide readership data. The second study constitutes part of a broader nationwide survey on the reading habits of school-aged youth. It explores the professional satisfactions and difficulties of Polish language teachers, their awareness of their students’ reading choices and needs, and the literary recommendations they provide.
