Synopsis
WHY POLISH? MOTIVATION TO LEARN LESS COMMONLY TAUGHT FOREIGN LANGUAGES ON THE EXAMPLE OF CHINESE-SPEAKING STUDENTS OF POLISH STUDIES
Polish is considered one of the less commonly taught foreign languages and is offered at many universities in China. Research on the motivations of Chinese-speaking students to learn Polish can help enhance the quality of teaching in Polish studies within China. This study, which collected data from students at three universities in Shanghai and Zhejiang Province, aims to identify the primary motivations driving these Polish studies students and to explore any changes in their motivation over time. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis methods were employed. The findings reveal that the respondents’ motivations for learning Polish are primarily linked to educational goals and personal development, rather than career aspirations or a strong affection for the Polish language. Additionally, new interests, positive attitudes, and effective teaching methods appear to have positively influenced the learners’ motivations.
