Synopsis

Il volume che consegniamo nelle mani del Lettore è il r isultato del lavoro di un gruppo interdisciplinare di studiosi provenienti dalla Polonia e dall’Italia, dediti a una ri essione sul Risorgimento come idea di rinascita nazionale, libertà e solidarietà, capace di unire le esperienze delle due nazioni. L’opera illustra le lotte italiane per l’unità e l’indipendenza, che divennero per i polacchi un’ispirazione alla propria “rinascita”, dal Romanticismo no ai nostri tempi. Gli Autori presentano il Risorgimento come simbolo universale del risveglio civile, il cui signi cato oltarepassa i con ni del XIX secolo, concorrendo a plasmare la mappa spirituale dell’Europa. “Nazione e libertà. Ecco il binomio indissolubile dei nostri due Risorgimenti... in questi anni di grandi inquietudini, di grandi con itti, ma anche di grandi speranze” – ricorda Giovanni Spadolini, attribuendo a questa ri essione un valore senza tempo.

Author Biographies

Alessandro Campi, University of Perugia

PhD (Habil.), is a full professor of History of Political Thought at the University of Perugia. He is the director of the Istituto per la storia del Risorgimento italiano. Since 2010, he has edited the quarterly magazine Rivista di Politica. A columnist for Il Messaggero and Il Mattino, he frequently comments on Italian and international politics. His recent books include Trasformazioni della politica (Rubbettino, 2022), Il fantasma della nazione (Marsilio, 2023), Machiavelliana (Rubbettino, 2024), and Un’esecuzione memorabile. Giovanni Gentile, il fascismo e la memoria della guerra civile (Le Lettere, 2025).

Andrea Ciampani, LUMSA University, Rome

PhD (Habil.), a full Professor of Contemporary History at Libera Università Maria Ss. Assunta (LUMSA) in Rome. Chairman of the European research network “Encounters of European Elites in the 19th Century,” member of the Scientific Board of the Istituto per la Storia del Risorgimento Italiano, Scientific Director of History of Contemporary Italy, published by Rubbettino. Member of scientific boards of European journals and historical collections, he has published many books and articles. He edited recently, with T. Kroll, the volume Transnational Encounters? European Elites, International Associations and National States (1882-1914), De Gruyter Oldenbourg, Berlin/Boston, 2025.

Stefan Bielański, University of the National Education Commission, Cracow

PhD (Habil.), is a Professor at the University of the National Education Commission (UKEN) in Kraków, in 2011-20, Director of the International Research Center “Mediterraneum” at the Institute of Political Science of the Pedagogical University (UP) in Kraków; and from 2021 at the Institute of Political Science and Administration of the University UP/UKEN – Head of the “Italian Studies” and “History of Geopolitical Thought” Research Teams. In 2022-24, Vice-Chairman of the Discipline Council of Political and Administrative Sciences UP/UKEN. From 2022, head of the Department of State Studies, and from 2024, Deputy Director of the Institute of Journalism and International Relations of the University of the National Education Commission (UKEN) in Krakow. His research interests include the political history of Italy, the history of historiography, and the history of political thought in Italy in the modern era.

Bartosz Kwieciński, Jagiellonian University

PhD, Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Communication and Media Policy, Jagiellonian University, formerly affiliated with the Center for Holocaust Studies at the same institution. A film historian and media scholar specializing in antisemitic propaganda. Author of Images and Stereotypes: Between the Poles of Visual Memory of the Holocaust. Participant in National Humanities Development Program projects on Jewish pogroms and representations of the Holocaust in Polish culture. His recent publications include chapters in Representations of the Holocaust in Polish Culture (1939-2019) (IBL PAS, 2021) and in the journal Jewish History Quarterly. He collaborates with the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.

Antonio Macchia, University of Teramo

PhD (Habil.), carries out teaching and research activities at the University of Teramo and at UNINT University in Rome. He holds a PhD in History of International Relations from La Sapienza University of Rome. He is a member of several academic associations, including SISI, AISSECO, and serves as Vice-President of the European Association of International Studies. His main publication is Solidarność e la fine del blocco sovietico (Solidarność and the End of the Soviet Bloc), Nuova Cultura, Rome, 2020.

Krzysztof Strzałka, Jagiellonian University

PhD, political scientist, historian, and professional diplomat (graduate of history and studied law at the Jagiellonian University). He also graduated with distinction in international relations from La Sapienza University in Rome. Assistant professor at the Institute of European Studies at the Jagiellonian University and Minister Plenipotentiary in the Department of Strategy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Author of a monograph and several academic articles on Polish-Italian relations as well as Italian foreign, European, and security policies, and international relations of the Holy See. He also carries out analyses of foreign policy, contemporary diplomacy, and EU policy in the Mediterranean basin and Africa.
