Synopsis
AN OSSETIC GRAMMAR. THE IRON DIALECT
The Ossetic language belongs to the group of Eastern Iranian Languages and is as such a continuation of those dialects which were spoken by the ancient tribes of Scythians, Sarmatians and Alans. These peoples inhabited the extensive territories of Central Asia and Eastern Europe. With regard to the significant distances that separated the various divisions that constitute the Iranian group of languages (ones that belong in conjunction with the Indo-Arian to the Indo-European family of languages) the differences that may be observed amongst Iranian languages are significantly more marked and numerous than the internal divisions to be seen in the separation of individ- ual Germanic, Romance, or Slavonic languages. And so, as an example, Persian as a language, here the main representative of the Iranian linguistic group, had already in late antiquity lost its noun declination (and here as the first amongst Indo-European languages as such!), while the Ossetic language makes use to this day of nine different cases, ones that recall in their typology those of Slavonic languages. This results from the extremely archaic nature of Ossetic as a language, the users of which have not neighboured the ancestors of modern day Persians for at least 2,500 years.
