Synopsis
A POET AT THE OPERA
The book attempts to show, by means of selected examples, how, in what context, and for what purpose figures of men and women of letters and their art appear in opera. The poet characters presented in the book are very dif ferent with regard to their stage personality, the literary trend they represent, and the function they fulfil in the story world. The aim of the work is to sketch – through confrontation of the most contrastive examples – a model of an opera based ‘history of literature’ that encompasses diverse percep tions, stereotypes and phantasms of poeticalness reflected in works of musi cal theatre.
