The subject of the book is the literary and sculptural work of Teofil Lenartowicz created during his prolonged stay in Italy. The analysis of Lenartowicz’s literary and sculptural works created in Italy, referred to as “the Florentine portfolio”, starts with the discussion of several aspects of the writer’s life, which include the circumstances of the poet’s stay in Florence, his involvement in the local artistic environment, and the correspondence between him and his Polish friends. In particular, the correspondence provides the most information about the life in exile of the author of Lirenka. The main subjects of the book are Lenartowicz’s literary works (Album włoskie poetry collection, poems inspired by art, and press articles) and sculptural works (presented in comparison to the general trends of the 19th century artistic sculpture and in the context of Lenartowicz’s writings). An important part of the dissertation consists of the presentation of the poet’s involvement with the Adam Mickiewicz Academy in Bologna, which is achieved by the use of previously unpublished archival sources obtained from Biblioteca comunale dell’Archiginnasio, located in Bologna. The monographic presentation of Lenartowicz as a versatile artist serves as an reassessment of the position that he currently holds considering the history of Polish literature and art. The author of the book also demonstrates the inaccurate nature of the label “Mazovian lyricist”, which has been attached to Lenartowicz’s works for many years, by presenting a wide range of artistic interests and intellectual horizons of the author of Album włoskie.
