ARMENIAN COMMUNITY IN STANISŁAWÓW IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 17TH CENT. AND THE 18TH CENT.: ORGANIZATION, ECONOMY, EVERYDAY LIFE
This book contains a description of the life of the Armenian community in Stanisławów in the second half of the 17th century and in the 18th century. The material comes mainly from Armenian court records, and its subsequent analysis concerns only one of the communities that existed in the old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The history of other Armenian centers awaits future research and elucidating.
Armenians were present in Stanisławów almost since the day of its foundation. As early as 1655, that is, three years after the settlement of the town, it owner, Andrzej Potocki, had a church built for Armenians. The first settlers arrived from Moldova and Hungary. The next large wave of Armenians resulted from taking over of Kamieniec Podolski by Turkey in 1672. In 1677, Andrzej Potocki established a self-governing Armenian community and gave it a separate privilege. Based on the census of Armenians, inventories, and registers of births, deaths and marriages, all preserved in the archives, it may be assumed that the Armenian population in Stanisławów exceeded 200 people, but never rose over 400 in the period analyzed.
