Synopsis

THE FRENCH GENERATION OF THE 1930S ÉCOLE NORMALE SUPÉRIEURE 1920-1940: ARON, NIZAN, SARTRE AND MERLEAU-PONTY

This will be a story – récit or text (in the sense of the early structuralists) that deliberately allows the participation of banished concepts, intuitions or simply words chased away (chassé) from the posthumanist narratives of the last decades of the 20th and first decades of the 21st century playing, however, a not insignificant role here. The story presented here – a continuation of the long-standing interests and publications of the writer of these words – though only seemingly looser in form, by no means departs from the requirements expected of academic dissertations. But the preoccupation with French esprit (it is one of those exiles from the 20th century humanities) – the spirit of freedom, contrariness, spontaneity, attachment to freedom of expression, that expression (the term of Maurice Merleau-Ponty belonging to our circle), ideas in constant motion, confrontation in a kind of agon – goes hand in hand with a correlated theme: the domain of the descriptions, analyses and reconstructions undertaken here. For we are writing about a particular stage of an individual’s formulation, his youth, a time of struggle, hope, but also sometimes inevitable defeats and failures; we are writing about a time that is so accurately reflected in the formula of rites of passage.
