TEOFILA SAPIEŻYNA NÉE JABŁONOWSKA (1742-1816) – PRIVATE LIFE AND PUBLIC ACTIVITY
The publication is devoted to the biography of one of the most prominent female members of the Bar Confederation, Teofila Sapieżyna, née Jabłonowska, the wife of the grand krajczy of Lithuania, whose activity has not been the subject of an indepth analysis by historians.
The monograph is structured thematically and chronologically, and consists of seven chapters. Chapter One focuses on Teofila Sapieżyna’s life before the establishment of the Bar Confederation in 1768 – her ancestry, family ties, education and the early years of her marriage to Józef Sapieha. The next part of the publication presents the activity of the duchess in the Bar Confederation. In addition to listing her activities, the chapter presents her motivation, the people with whom she was in the closest contact at that time and the way in which she built her position among confederates. The third chapter is devoted to the duchess’s remarks on the current situation in Europe, the status of the Bar Confederation on the international stage, the directions of searching possible allies and her attitude to the activities of the confederates at European courts.
The further chapters focus on Teofila Sapieżyna’s stay in France. The fourth one, presents her attitude towards the preparations to the Partition Sejm and its proceedings, as well as towards the King Stanisław August and the international situation after the fall of the Bar Confederation. The main focus is put on the analysis of her relationship with the French court, particularly Maria Anna Ludwika Jabłonowska, princesse de Talmont, Françoise de Chalus, comte de Narbonne, and the daughter of King Luis XV Marie Adélaïde. This is of particular importance due to the fact that Teofila Sapieżyna’s standing with the royalty greatly strengthened her position among the confederates, earning her a reputation as a very influential person. On the other hand, she attempted to leverage her connections to draw the attention of the French elite to the situation that the Bar Confederation was in, and also to help her husband to obtain a military rank in the French army. The fifth chapter presents the social circle of the Sapieha family and their private life, including their increasing financial difficulties and the reasons why they decided to return to their homeland in 1777.
