Synopsis

GALICIA. THE LEGACY OF THE HABSBURG MONARCHY IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH

The presented book is the outline of the debate of the Second Krakow Genealogical Conference, entitled ‘Galicia – the Legacy of the Habsburg Monarchy in the Perspective of Genealogical Research’, organised by the Your Roots Association in Poland together with the Krakow National Archives and the Galicia Jewish Museum, which took place on May 25-26, 2023. The texts included in the monograph have a variety of topics. The chronological framework includes in particular the period of existence
of Galicia and Lodomeria as a crown country – the years 1772-1918 – but since several documents were created outside of these dates, some of the articles touched on the pre-partition issues, as well as the events after the end of the First World War.
The main territorial criterion in this study is the area administratively belonging to Galicia in the 18th-20th centuries. However, the areas directly adjacent to it, which are important for its populationfrom economic, educational and migration perspectives among others, including Cieszyn, Orava, and the Kingdom of Poland, were not omitted. The editor of the volume did not decide on the typical division of the book into chapters, but he did not leave the ranking of individual articles to chance. The publication opens with three texts devoted to the resources and collections of state, church and scientific institutions.
Genealogists, regionalists, those interested in history and professional researchers receive a valuable, interdisciplinary volume of studies. It is undeniable that the advantage is the promotion of widely unknown archival sources useful for genealogy. On more than one occasion, the authors point to the still existing limitations in access to materials, their non-development, as anappeal to institutions related to the cultural heritage of the long nineteenth century. The richly illustrated book is also an extended genealogical handbook kept in a way that is partly personal, as it contains the authors' invaluable personal genealogical experiences. This, in turn, flexibly brings the popular audience closer to learning.
