THE WORLD’S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION OF 1893
The World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 was a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of North America. Over six months, the fair was visited by over 27 million people who came not only from the United States of America, but from every corner of the world to see exhibits presented by 46 countries on 280 hectares in Chicago’s Jackson Park. Wystawa Światowa w Chicago w 1893 roku describes the history of this event, which has never before been the object of an in-depth study in Polish literature, from its conception to the closing of the fair. The first chapter serves as an introduction to the history of world expositions, with an emphasis on the two most important – in the author’s opinion – fairs that preceded the one in Chicago: The Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia. The next chapter contains the history of the organisation and building of the Chicago Exposition, a fundamental part being the analysis of the architectural aspect of the exposition, including artistic aspects such as painting and sculpture. The third chapter is intended to be a cross-sectional view of the exhibits shown during the fair and is organised in accordance with the official classification used in 1893. It details the more interesting exhibits showing how participating countries wanted to present themselves. The last two chapters outline the reception of the fair in the daily press, American and Polish-American respectively. The sources used in this volume consist mainly of official documentation and plans along with the works published during the time of the fair, supplemented by contemporary monographs. The photographs presented here were the official photographic views approved for publication by the exhibition authorities: this allows the reader to see the exposition the way it was seen by everyone 130 years ago.
