SELECTED PERFORMATIVE TRADITIONS OF KERALA (SOUTH INDIA)
The present publication is the result of fieldwork done by Indology students from Jagiellonian University, Krakow in the South Indian state of Kerala. The participants became acquainted with the performing traditions of the region by watching performances, talking to artists and learning about the centres and methods of training adepts and continuators of traditional performing arts.
The result is a concise compendium that encourages further study and introduces the colourful and diverse world of stage forms still alive in Kerala. Classical forms such as Sanskrit theatre Kudiyattam and Nangyar Kuttu (essay by Karolina Dylong), Kathakali dance drama (essay by Julia Lachowska and Agnieszka Wójcik) and its puppet version Pavakathakali (essay by Eliza Łach) are discussed here as well as Tolpavakuttu shadow theatre (essay by Zuzanna Szymczyk), Mohiniyattam dance (essay by Natalie Jagło and Natalia Migas) and Teyyam ritual performance (described by Weronika Wyłupek). Each of these chapters consists of background information based on various studies, articles and monographs, and then the authors describe the specific performances they witnessed, documented by the photographs taken by the participants of the Kerala expedition. The Kerala musical instruments that accompany the performances are also introduced and described by Aleksandra Dudra. Since cyclical festivals in Kerala provide an opportunity to showcase certain stage forms, two of the articles describe the Mahaśivaratri and Attukal Pongala festivals as the setting for the performances (articles by Karolina Mucha and Weronika Drozd).
