Synopsis
Polish musicians made Paris the preferred destination of their travels from the time of Chopin onwards, but in the interwar years it became virtually the second musical capital of Poland. Artists travelled there en masse, in search of knowledge, work and inspiration. They were drawn by the city’s cosmopolitan atmosphere and unlimited possibilities of artistic development. Paris was the window to the world, the place where one might encounter outstanding composers and performers, and feel oneself to be a member of a great international artistic community. Many Polish musicians tied their hopes and plans for the future to that city.
This volume depicts the Polish presence in Paris in a wide social-cultural perspective, with a variety of characters, both individuals and collective. In a sense the city itself is also a character, interacting with the artists, stimulating their creativity and artistic energies. Research material was collected in France and in Poland, and use was also assembleded from digital collections. Bringing it together and editing it was a laborious but also fascinating task. Discovering new faces, exploring unknown locations, and listening to the voices of the critics might be described as a journey in time. One can discover a great deal from the sources if one reads with attention to detail. A penetrating analysis with a pinch of heuristic imagination opens up new spaces for reflection and gives rise to a fascinating story of musical Paris à la polonaise in the interwar period.
