HUNGARIAN PLACES – SYMBOLS IN THE CROATIAN LITERATURE OF THE 16TH AND 17TH CENTURIES
This paper discusses Hungarian places – the symbols of battles against the Otto-man Empire, described in the Croatian literature of the 16th and 17th centuries. The issue has been illustrated by the following texts: Tužba grada Budima by Mavro Vetranović Čavčić, Podsjedanje i osvojenje Sigeta by Ferenac Črnko, Adriaiten-gernek Syrenaia by Nikola Zrinski (along with its Croatian translation entitled Adrijanskog mora Sirena by Petar Zrinski), and Odiljenje sigetsko by Pavao Ritter Vitezović. The main themes of the analysed texts include historical events such as the Battle of Mohács (1526), the Siege of Buda (1541) and the Battle of Szigetvár (1566). In the Hungarian literature places connected with these events and most of all their participants were very often sacralized while the events taking place during the battles were mythologized. However, these really significant – we can even say crucial – points on the Hungarian historical-cultural-literary map create also their own valuable chapter in the Croatian literary tradition. The same motifs, connected with the history of Hungary and observed in Hungarian and Croatian literatures, prove the existence of some sense of the relationship between two indicated peoples as well as some awareness of their common fate.
