POLISH SKOVORODIANS: THE RECEPTION OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHT AND LITERARY WORKS OF HRYHORIY SKOVORODA IN POLAND

The literary work and philosophical thought of the Ukrainian thinker Hryhorij Skov-oroda (1722-1794) aroused keen interest in his contemporaries already during his lifetime. Compared to Socrates, he devoted his work to ethical issues, and his life was a reflection of teaching. Particular attention of scholars was attracted by the symbolic, often hermetic, ambiguous style of his works. you can find there numerous biblical reminiscences, and references to the ancient Greek and Roman tradition. The reli-gious character of Skovoroda’s thought with clear mystical inclinations found itself in the sphere of scientific interest also in Poland, which was largely due to the cen-turies-long coexistence of Poles and Ukrainians within the Commonwealth. Skovo- rodian’s monograph in Polish is an attempt to outline the reception of Skovoroda’s work in Polish science initiated by Adam Honory Kirkor in Krakow in 1874. Initially, it was shaped as part of broader synthetic works on the history of Ukrainian litera-ture and polemics around the Union of Brest. Apart from Kirkor’s work, this period resulted in a Polish-language study by the outstanding Ukrainian scholar Ivan Franko, a comparison of the thoughts of Skovoroda and the Ukrainian Orthodox polemi-cist Ivan Wyszeński conducted by Józef Tretiak, and in the interwar period Bohdan Łepki’s historical and literary synthesis published in Warsaw. The interwar period is a particularly fertile period in the study of Skovoroda’s philosophical thought. Ivan Mirchuk, as part of the articles presented in Przegląd Filozoficzny, analyzed Skovoro-da’s thought in the context of the concept of Ukrainian national philosophy. Jarosław Ulwański, in his doctoral dissertation published in Kwartalnik Filozoficzny, charac-terized Skovoroda’s philosophy from the perspective of the pantheistic trend, making a critical reflection on the current scientific achievements in this field. The central place in this period is occupied by the monograph Фільсофія Г.С. Сковороди, pub-lished in Warsaw in 1934 by the Ukrainian scholar Dmytro Czyżewski. Although the national affiliation of the author and the language of the work do not give grounds for including it in the Polish scientific discourse, the place and circumstances of its publi-cation as part of the activities of the Ukrainian Scientific Institute in Warsaw and the research perspective adopted in it, which for decades defined global research in this field, demands presentation of its assumptions and main conclusions. This period ends with an extensive article by Czesław Jastrzębiec-Kozłowski analyzing Skovoroda’s thought in the light of the messianic tradition of Józef Hoene-Wroński.
