This book (Czech Reading Republic: Generations – Phenomena – Life-Stories) deals with the Czech reading culture. It is divided into four parts. Its point of departure consists in the oral history based field work carried out between 2009 and 2015. In this time span, 138 narrative interviews among the whole spectrum of the Czech population (15 years and older) were recorded and transcribed. As for the design of these interviews, they were conducted as reading life-stories, beginning with the narrator’s family background, going on to the pre-school, early, late and post-school age and gathering all utterances concerning the subject’s reading: reading out loud by parents, the first book read, initiation into adult books, compulsory reading, reading guidelines from parents, banned books, library attendance, other mass media activities and their influence on the narrator’s reading. The last section of the interviews was devoted to reading manners and rituals.
