Synopsis

RUSSIA FIRST. FOREIGN AND SECURITY POLICY OF KYRGYZSTAN AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF NEW CHALLENGES IN THE EURASIAN SPHERE

Since the 2010 revolution, Kyrgyzstan has chosen a clear course in its foreign and security policy: to look to Russia for security. All Kyrgyz presidents, despite their differences and personal conflicts, remained loyal to this foreign policy dimension. It has been all the more obvious given the fact that this course follows the traditional, peripheral model of Kyrgyzstan’s development, based on Russia. In the conditions of Sino-Russian understanding in Central Asia – Central Asia is not a place of a New Great Game, but rather witnesses a Sino-Russian entente cordiale – Kyrgyzstan chooses the devil it knows, the old patron, knowing all too well that the Chinese alternative would be much worse.
