Synopsis
MAKING NATIVITY SCENES IN POMERANIA
In her paper “Not Only in Kraków. Making Nativity Scenes in Pomerania,” Alicja Soćko-Mucha describes the problems of making nativity scenes in Pomerania and Kashubia and contrasts them with those created in Kraków. The author concentrates on the collection in the Museum of Hel (Muzeum Helu), which had been submitted for the Pomeranian nativity scene competition in 2016. Majority of those nativity scenes are sculpted in wood. The author analyzes Pomeranian and Kashubian motives, such as boats, fishermen, fish, seagulls, seals, Kashubians in folk costumes, the seven Kashubian colors, ambers. During 2019 Christmas season, the Museum of Hel organized the “Borrow Your Nativity Scene” action in which local restaurants, shops and other institutions could borrow and present a selected nativity scene. A similar initiative (“All Around the Nativity Scenes”) has been organized by the Museum of Kraków (Muzeum Krakowa) for a number of years.
