Synopsis

THE BREWERY IN GÓRA ROPCZYCKA IN THE YEARS 1875–1921: PROPINATION, LEASE, TAVERNS

The beginnings of Góra Ropczycka date back to the 13th or the 14th century, when the village was chartered under German or Polish law. In subsequent centuries, the village was part of royal property and belonged to the so-called “Ropczyce lease”. By the second half of the 14th century, Góra had already become part of the parish. According to Jan Długosz (Johannes Longinus), there were two taverns in the villages of Ropczyce deanery in the late Middle Ages: a royal tavern in Gnojnica and a nobleman’s tavern in Góra Ropczycka. In 1614, Ropczyce landed estates were officially sectioned off as Ropczyce Starosty with its seat in Góra. The starosty was leased or pledged; its usufructuaries included e.g. Mikołaj Spytko Ligęza of Borek, considered the first Starost of Ropczyce. After the First Partition of Poland, the Austrian government decided to auction off the property of the Ropczyce Starosty. It was purchased by Stanisław Kostka Sadowski, the then Starost of Ropczyce. Later, Ropczyce estates changed hands several times, transferred from the Jaworski to Starzeński family, then acquired by the Potocki family from Krzeszowice. The transactions allowed the Potocki family to become owners of the landed estates in the late 1880s. The property remained under common administration and was still colloquially called “Sędziszów estates”. It was later inherited by Zofia, daughter of Artur Potocki. Zofia was the wife of Zdzisław Tarnowski, who owned an enormous group of landed estates, commonly referred to as “Dzików estates”. The couple’s property remained under shared administration located in Dzików. After the couple’s death Sędziszów estates was property of Andrzej Tarnowski from the Rudnik branch of the Tarnowski family and his wife Zofia until the outbreak of World War II.
