FROM THE HISTORY OF THE CULT OF SAINT HEDWIG OF POLAND
The reputation for holiness of Queen Hedwig started as early as the final years of her life, her very last days and the funeral, and it continued to be vibrant through the first half of the 15th century. It emerged in the testimonies given by the members of the Queen’s entourage (Abp. Wojciech Jastrzębiec, Bp. Piotr Wysz, and Rev. Prof. Stanisław of Skalbmierz), as well as an anonymous scribe of the Kraków Cathedral who made a note in the cathedral calendar under the date of her death that may be called the first litany to celebrate the Queen. The second generation of great worshippers of Hedwig included Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki, father Jan Długosz, professors of the Theology Faculty of the Kraków Studium Generale, and secular people. Due to various political, economic, dynastic and other causes, the efforts that were made to proceed with the canonization of the Queen proved unsuccessful at that time, whereas it was the Reformation that became a major obstacle in the 16th century. During the period of the reform of Catholicism, the cult of Queen Hedwig gave rise to a conviction shared by many lay people and clergymen alike that she had already been canonized, which explains placing her images with a halo around her head in numerous churches.
