Synopsis
“…BUT THIS FEAR, WHICH WAS IN YOU, YOU PASS ON TO YOUR CHILD, WITH THE MOTHER’S MILK” – SILENCE AND INTERGENERATIONAL TRAUMA OF THE ROMA AND SINTI
This article deals with the definition of trauma, particularly historical and cultural or collective trauma, within the social sciences, as well as its intergenerational transmission, and considers approaches to trauma analysis within the framework of romani studies. The research framework of this article is based on theories and studies of intergenerational trauma. Particularly interesting in this context is the theory of cultural trauma, which impacts and transforms the identity of persecuted groups. In addition, the article refers to postcolonial theory, which, together with cultural and gender studies, delineates the field of “new social sciences”. The article argues that the exclusion of the Sinti and Roma from European historiography falls within this problem area. And although there have been relatively many studies on the extermination of the Sinti and Roma in recent times, the aspect of trauma in this context remains largely unexplored.
