BETWEEN THE MAP AND IMAGINATION – A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF EDWARD BROOKE-HITCHING’S THE PHANTOM ATLAS AND JUDITH SCHALANSKY’S ATLAS OF REMOTE ISLANDS

This article presents a comparative analysis of The Phantom Atlas by Edward Brooke-Hitching and Atlas of Remote Islands by Judith Schalansky, focusing on their themes, the concept of the atlas and map in literary studies, as well as editorial and graphic aspects. The authors approach cartography differently: Brooke-Hitching portrays maps as records of historical hoaxes, while Schalansky sees them as a medium of poetic alienation. The analysis considers the influence of the authors’ biographies on their perspectives on cartography and highlights differences in visual presentation—Brooke-Hitching’s rich iconography contrasts with Schalansky’s minimalist aesthetics. The article demonstrates how both atlases, despite their differences in form and message, explore the boundaries of reality and cartographic narration.
