ELECTORAL PARTICIPATION FROM A POLITICAL SCIENCE PERSPECTIVE
Electoral participation plays a key role in the functioning of modern democracies. It concerns not only the act of voting itself but also broader processes of civic engagement and the legitimization of political power. Therefore, this issue is present in political science discourse, which grapples with definitions, various theories, as well as the functioning and assessment of the condition of contemporary democracies. In all these aspects, participation expresses concern for the public sphere, and building a civil society becomes a challenge for modern generations. Participation thus becomes a guarantor of freedom and a safeguard against undemocratic tendencies. It restores the true dimension of citizenship as a counterbalance to consumer-oriented individuals who are unfamiliar with both communal empathy and engagement in the name of the common good.
