Synopsis
SUSTAINABLE MULTICULTURALISM: NEW WAVES OF MIGRATION TO KAZAKHSTAN?
The chapter analyses contemporary challenges and opportunities related to shaping sustainable multiculturalism in Kazakhstan in the context of new waves of migration. The author attempts to answer the question of whether Kazakhstan, as a country with a longstanding tradition of multi-ethnicity and multi-religiousness, is prepared to accept new groups of migrants and how potential demographic changes may affect social cohesion and identity politics. The chapter discusses current migration trends, including the influx of citizens from neighbouring countries, economic migrants and returning members of the Kazakh diaspora. The author also analyses the state’s efforts to integrate migrants, promote intercultural dialogue and prevent ethnic tensions. The text is part of a broader debate on the model of multiculturalism in Central Asia and its sustainable development.
