RANGES OF THE POLISH ETHNOGRAPHIC
Many authors tried to elaborate a map of the Polish ethnographic groups – the most known is Ugrupowanie etniczne ludu polskiego [“The Ethnic Grouping of the Polish Folk”] of Jan Bystroń, published in 1925. The progress of research in 95 years, publication of many monographs – “Atlas Polskich Strojów Ludowych” [The Atlas of the Polish Folk Costumes] above all – caused that the work of Bystroń is already of archival value. Janusz Kamocki made an effort to elaborate a current range of the Polish ethnographic groups – as he writes at the end of his work “current in 2020”. Among Polish ethnographers, he has probably the greatest experience in research on this issue – he already published his elaborations in 1965 and 1991. Furthermore, he is the author of two issues of Atlas Polskich Strojów Ludowych. In principle, it is accepted that the Polish nation was created due to combining of six basic Lechitic tribes: Małopolanie, Wielkopolanie, Mazowszanie, Sieradzanie, Ślązacy and Pomorzanie. The author determines also the large group of Kresowiacy – created as a result of historical events – and group currently creating on the so-called recovered lands, establishing from settlers of different parts of Poland which he calls tentatively the “settlement group”. He also traces here a chance of creating new ethnographic groups. Moreover, he distinguishes two subgroups: Górale [Highlanders] – separated from Małopolanie and Ślązacy, and Mazurzy Pruscy [Prussian Masurians] – separated from Mazowszanie.
