NOT ONLY LICZYRZEPA [RÜBEZAHL]! KUNIGUNDE FROM CHOJNASTY CASTLE AND THE PROPAGANDA DIMENSION OF LEGENDS IN THE DOMESTICATING PROCESS OF CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF THE JELENIA GÓRA VALLEY AND THE GIANT MOUNTAINS AFTER WORLD WAR II

In the process of cultural familiarization of the so-called Recovered Territories in the postwar period, cultural animators referred to various types of tools, including selected folk literature. This phenomenon should also be noted in relation to the Jelenia Góra Valley and the Giant Mountains. In the second half of the 1940s, Józef Sykulski was the leader in this matter. Based on verified and modified German tales, literary works were created, which were given an important social, informational, and popularizing role. Having undergone a clearly political and ideological communist functionalization, they were included in a rich collection of propaganda tools. They served many purposes. Firstly, there is the procedure of polonization/repolonization of the cultural landscape of the region, so that it could be accepted by Polish settlers. Secondly, they served, based on the paradigm of the nation, to implement the goals of the historical policy of the Polish state at that time. Thirdly, based on the paradigm of the state (the Piast myth), they pursued the ideological goals of incorporating the so-called Recovered Territories into the “Matrix”. In the case of literary works endorsed by Sykulski, all the aforementioned goals were pursued primarily on the basis of two German legends: about the Spirit of the Giant Mountains and Kunigunde, the lady of the Chojnasty Castle. Addressed to both young people and adults, they reached a very wide audience. In this way, they were part of the propaganda process of shaping the ideas desired by the then authorities regarding the history of the region, as well as Poland’s post-war rights to the Jelenia Góra Valley and the Giant Mountains.
