Synopsis
WHO HAUNTS IN CHICAGO? ON GHOSTS AND CLASSIC URBAN LEGENDS
The legend of the vanishing hitchhiker is considered the most widespread type of ghost story, and at the same time the most well-known contemporary urban legend. One of the realizations of this legend is a multi-threaded version recorded many times in Chicago, whose heroine is Resurrection Mary or, in short, Mary Rez. Interesting are the efforts to find the “real” or “original” Mary, which have been ongoing for years, and which fit into the trend of public verification (debunking and confirming) of urban legends. They are focused on attempts to identify the person whose tragic fate could have given rise to various stories of encounters with the ghost haunting Archer Avenue in Chicago and the area around Resurrection Cemetery. They are aimed at proving that the story of Mary Rez is not a variation of the legend of the vanishing hitchhiker, but a story, although incredible, but referring to a specific space and based on facts.
