MEMORIES OF THE CHILDHOOD IN CRACOW BASED ON THE BOOK OF CHARLES ESTREICHER JR. “NIE OD RAZU KRAKÓW ZBUDOWANO”

The city’s image, taken from a book of memoirs by a professor at the Jagiellonian University – Karol Estreicher – Nie od razu Kraków zbudowano– confronted with texts of similar problems by Zdzisław Czermański, Jalu Kurek, Zygmunt Nowakowski, Mieczysław Smolarski and Krystyna Grzybowska de domo Estreicher, exemplifies the perception of Cracow as urbs celeberrima. The analysis of descriptions of places (streets, squares, customer services, centers of social life), people (Estreicher’s family, the bourgeoisie and intelligentsia, famous artists and writers), also events and progressive projects (innovation of infrastructure) presented from the perspective of the child-narrator will allow a reconstruction of the image of the city and the residents, and thus will answer the question of the creation of Cracow in the memories of Estreicher. A critical assessment of this work will bring an individual, childlike, slightly idyllic perspective of the city.
