ONCE I HAD A HOME... GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH THE JEWISH KAZIMIERZ THROUGH THE OUTPUT OF MORDECHAJ GEBIRTIG
Mordechai Gebirtig, the author of some of the most popular Jewish folk songs, was an inhabitant of Kazimierz. He died in the Cracow ghetto during the Nazi occupation. The paper presents a story about Kazimierz through the prism of the bard’s works and biography. Legends about Gebirtig, his biography and works can be used to talk about Jewish traditions, everyday life in Kazimierz and their strong connection to the city. The artist writes about the intergenerational changes attached to the Haskalah and the problem of poverty. His poems encourage us to discuss the political engagement of a part of the Jews, their interest in socialism, and rethink the nature of war and anti-Semitism. Some of the songs draw attention to the plight of the Jews from Cracow, including the behavior of Poles during the Nazi occupation.
