THE LETTER FROM CAPTAIN GENERAL TOMÁS DE ZUMALACÁRREGUI Y DE IMAZ TO LOUIS XAVIER AUGUET DE SAINT-SYLVAIN, BARON DE LOS VALLES – A CONTRIBUTION TO THE BEHIND-THE SCENES OF THE FIRST CARLIST WAR (1833-1840)

The article discusses an episode from the First Carlist War (1833-1840), specifically focusing on the year 1835, when Carlist forces were achieving victories. On June 10th of that year, the Carlist commander-in-chief wrote a letter to Charles V’s adjutant, Baron Louis Auguet de Saint-Sylvain (1796-1857), reporting on recent successful military operations against the forces loyal to Regent Maria Christina. The first part of the text presents the origins of the Carlist movement, followed by an account of the military actions during the early phase of the conflict, as well as the profiles of the letter’s sender and recipient. These discussions culminate in an analysis and interpretation of General Tomás de Zumalacárregui’s letter to Baron Louis Auguet de Saint-Sylvain, dated June 10, 1835, preserved in manuscript form at the Archivo Histórico Nacional under the reference ES.28079.AHN//DIVERSOS-COLECCIONES, 2, N.128.
