200 YEARS OF THE BREWERY IN POŁCZYN-ZDRÓJ
The brewery in Połczyn-Zdrój was established in 1825, so it is one of the oldest plants currently operating in Poland. For the first 120 years, the brewery remained in the hands of four generations of the Fuhrmann family. The brewery was systematically modernized and shortly before the outbreak of World War II was one of the most modern plants in Germany.
In 1945, the brewery was located in the territory granted to Poland, but was occupied by the Red Army, which started production there for the army. Carl Fuhrmann remained in Połczyn-Zdrój and, as an excellent specialist, was engaged by the Russians to work at the brewery. Still in 1945, he ended up in Legnica, where he ran a brewery that remained under Soviet administration. It was not until February 1946 that the brewery was handed over to the Polish side. Alexander Stromenger was appointed the fi rst post-war director. For the next 45 years the brewery operated as a state-owned plant, under changing organizational structures. This was changed by the privatization process, which began in 1990. After another sometimes turbulent 35 years, the brewery today operates as a private company.
The source base on the history of the brewery is rather modest. Most of the documents were lost during the turbulent events of history. Those that luckily survived are scattered around state archives and private collections. The history of the brewery is documented by two unique collections of photographs. The first dates from the interwar period, the second was created in late 1948. Analysis of the surviving written and photographic sources has produced a fascinating history of the Połczyn-Zdrój brewery.
