POLITICS AS A VOCATION OR THE WAY TO BE A CONSERVATIVE-LIBERAL-CHRISTIAN REPUBLICAN
A reflection on Prof. Miłowit Kuniński (1946–2018) – a contribution to the history of Polish contemporary philosophy of politics – provides a good opportunity to consider the idea of politics understood as a vocation. In the light of the concepts employed by Max Weber („life for politics” versus „life from politics”, „ideal type”) and above all of the legacy of Republicanism in Antiquity, Christianity, as well as modern – liberal and conservative – philosophy of politics, philosophy understood as a vocation may be viewed as an instance of a life for politics which involves theoretical activity, namely, rational, conscientious and prudent reflection on the idea of politics. This reflection, in turn, sees in politics – such as it is supposed to be – a combination of rational government and prudent project which do not infringe on the personal freedom of individuals under this government; are driven towards the benefit of the whole community; and share a transcendent perspective of this theoretical reflection.
