„Golden visas” is a colloquial term for procedures allowing to obtain a residence permit or citizenship in a simplified way, in exchange for making a specific investment in the country. In the European Union several Member States have introduced such immigrant investor programs, but the criteria of those programs differ significantly. Although golden visas are a widespread phenomenon, they still arouse considerable controversy due to the very idea of commercializing political rights, but also due to potential threats to the entire regional system. The aim of this paper is to identify and describe the dangers arising for the European Union in connection with the existence of such investment programs in Member States. The paper will discuss threats appearing at the level of internal and economic security as well as in the sphere of fundamental EU values.
